10 WWE Moments In 2023 That Made No Sense

2023 has been an eventful year for WWE, with Triple H experiencing his first full calendar year in creative control. With the sale to Endeavor going through, some big returns, and record-breaking revenue at events, it has been a notable one for sure.

Seth Rollins was one of the top WWE stars in 2023, being featured in every single premium live event.

Even in a historic year, there have been some moments, matches, and storylines that have made no sense. This is commonplace in the professional wrestling world and WWE in particular, and some moments have certainly stood out more than others. Whether it be a creative decision or something else, some moments left fans a little bewildered.

10 Bray Wyatt & Uncle Howdy Joining Forces

The Whole Uncle Howdy Story Was A Mess

  • Bray Wyatt & Uncle Howdy were feuding, but suddenly became allies
  • There was no explanation for the development in this story

Bray Wyatt’s 2022 return saw the introduction of the Uncle Howdy character, and in 2023 it was still developing. Howdy seemed to be an evil force of Wyatt’s who attacked him and caused him pain, but suddenly they joined forces.

When Wyatt feuded with Bobby Lashley, Howdy simply became nothing more than a lackey and punching bag. This complete 180 degree flip made no sense and received no explanation.

9 Jimmy Uso Turning On Jey Uso

The Bloodline Storyline Became A Disaster

  • Jimmy Uso cost his twin brother the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship
  • Jimmy Uso’s explanation was weak

At SummerSlam 2023, Jimmy Uso attacked his brother and cost him the main event. This was a shocking moment, and fans eagerly awaited his explanation. Jimmy said he didn’t want Jey to become like Roman Reigns, and that was that.

This was painfully weak, didn’t make sense, and the follow up of Jimmy rejoining The Bloodline made fans shake their heads at the plot holes and contradictions of The Bloodline storyline in the latter half of 2023.

8 John Cena Burying Austin Theory On The Mic

Austin Theory Got No Benefit From Feuding With John Cena

  • John Cena verbally tore Austin Theory a new one
  • Austin Theory defeated John Cena, but it wasn’t a strong win

In the lead up to what should’ve been a star-making win for Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39, John Cena arrived on RAW, exposed Theory’s weakness as a performer, and proceeded to get a visible win in their match with the referee down, before Theory cheated to beat him.

Theory had never looked worse, and any potential he had was torn away. It made no sense for the part-time Cena to bury Theory in this way, especially since he is still a young name with potential to be a star.

7 John Cena Hyping Up A WrestleMania In The UK

WWE Aren’t Planning A UK WrestleMania

  • John Cena showed up at Money in the Bank to endorse a WrestleMania in the UK
  • Fans were given some false hope

John Cena’s return at Money in the Bank was a great moment, and the crowd was electric as he toyed with the idea of bringing WrestleMania to the UK. Shortly after, it emerged that WWE had no plans for this, and it was done to try and make cities bid for WrestleMania.

Rhea Ripley became WWE’s top female star in 2023. Here are all of Ripley’s WWE PLE matches of 2023, ranked from worst to best.

In truth, if WWE had no concrete plans in place, it made no sense to tease an audience like this in such a way, especially since a WrestleMania in the UK would be a once in a lifetime thing for most in attendance.

6 Brock Lesnar’s Heel Turn On Cody Rhodes

Brock Lesnar Attacked Cody Rhodes With No Motive

  • WWE didn’t really explain Brock Lesnar’s heel turn
  • Cody Rhodes & Brock Lesnar feuded for months without a reason

On the night after WrestleMania Brock Lesnar turned heel and attacked Cody Rhodes in a shocking moment. This heel turn wasn’t really explained, with WWE providing a very vague motive.

However, this led to months of a feud between Cody Rhodes and Lesnar that was sparked by something that made no sense. Rhodes eventually got the rub, but it would have been nice if it had actually made some sense.

5 The 2023 WWE Draft

WWE Has A Loose Brand Split Once Again

  • The Brand Split had been a mess for a while
  • WWE didn’t really fix things with another draft

In 2023, Triple H looked to give RAW and SmackDown a refresh with a new brand split. However, it made no sense to do this given that the brand split was still loose in the aftermath.

Wrestlers from all shows have crossed over here and there, and even with the introduction of two separate general managers in Nick Aldis and Adam Pearce, it hasn’t stopped wrestlers jumping from brand to brand.

4 Solo Sikoa Interfering In SummerSlam Main Event

Tribal Rules Match Was Supposed To Have No Interference

  • Solo Sikoa attacked Jey Uso during his match with Roman Reigns
  • WWE went against their own rules

The SummerSlam 2023 main event was supposed to be held under “Tribal Rules”, with it being stated beforehand that no one would interfere. This didn’t stop Solo Sikoa, and this caused no form of punishment or consequence despite it not making any sense at all.

Why WWE set these rules just to defy them was a shame, and it led to a frustrating night at SummerSlam.

CM Punk Pandered To WWE

  • Fans weren’t convinced by CM Punk’s comeback speech
  • The promo contradicted everything about CM Punk’s old character

CM Punk had always been the anti-established face of WWE back when he wrestled there full time, but after his shocking return, things took a complete turn. He pandered, he said he was happy to be home, and he showed no sort of edge.

This went against everything that CM Punk stands for, and it made no sense for him to be brought back in such an underwhelming and stale way.

2 Hot Potatoing The Women’s Tag Team Championship

The Women’s Tag Title Scene Has Had No Direction

  • WWE has never known what to do with the women’s tag division
  • The title changes have made little sense

WWE has had no direction for the Women’s Tag Team Titles in 2023, and it has seen a selection of short reigns, hot potatoing, and hardly any proper feuds.

Fans just don’t like or care about these current WWE wrestlers.

Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez were thrown together and had two pointless reigns, Becky Lynch & Lita were also another thrown together pairing, and for the most part the division has just been a disaster yet again.

1 Bobby Lashley & Brock Lesnar Ending In DQ

WWE Wasted A Good Rivalry

  • Bobby Lashley defeated Brock Lesnar via disqualification
  • It made no sense for the feud to end on this note

The feud between Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley had been on and off for a couple of years, and fans expected a decisive winner. However, Lesnar got himself disqualified at Elimination Chamber, leading to no resolution.

Neither man exactly needed the momentum, nor would either man have suffered from a defeat, so it made absolutely no sense for WWE to not give this match a real winner.
