13 NFL Players Who Threw A Touchdown Pass (& Weren’t Quarterbacks)

NFL quarterbacks are the best at what they do, which is throwing the ball to an open receiver. We’ve seen some excellent field commanders over the years, as fans have been witness to the greatest quarterback play ever over the last few years with players such as Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers. However, it’s not always quarterbacks who throw the ball in an NFL game.

While quarterbacks normally make some incredible plays, that’s not always the case. A trick play is one of the funnest things to see in football. It just so happens in that many of those trick plays, we’ve seen some non-quarterbacks throw some incredible touchdown passes.

UPDATE: 2023/11/07 13:00 EST BY STEFANO MOCELLA

There’s no doubt that the NFL has pivoted to an offensively driven league. Coaches have gotten more and more creative in their schemes and play calling, and the league’s rules definitely favor the offense. Combine that with the superior athleticism we’re seeing today from the players, and you get a lot more incredible plays. When you also factor in that many NFL players played a different position in high school, that also lends itself to some trickery where a receiver or a running back will wind up throwing a touchdown pass. Expect to see more and more players on a list like this as the years go on. Let’s take closer look at non-QBs with a TD pass (or more) to their name

It’s no secret that over the past few seasons, the Titans’ offense goes as Derrick Henry goes. Everyone in the stadium and watching on TV expects Derrick Henry to get the ball on any given play, so the Titans have had to get creative at times in how they use him.

Henry has thrown for a touchdown pass in each of his last two seasons, once in 2022 to Austin Hooper in a Thursday night game against Green Bay, and one to Michael Pruitt in a 2021 regular season win over Kansas City. Henry also added a TD pass in the Titans’ surprise 2019-20 playoff run, with a jump TD pass to Corey Davis in Tennessee’s Divisional Round upset over Baltimore.

Of course Deebo Samuel is on this list. There’s nothing the 49ers won’t have Deebo Samuel do in their offense, as he can line up as a receiver or running back on any given play. Deebo is simply an all-around amazing football player that contributes to the team in any way that’s needed.

As for the touchdown pass that lands him on this list, Deebo’s TD pass came in a crucial Week 18 game against the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 season. With the 49ers needing a win over their division rivals to make the playoffs, Deebo threw an absolute dime to receiver Jauan Jennings for a 24-yard score. The Niners would go on to win that game and punch their ticket to the postseason.

Deebo’s teammate Christian McCaffrey is quite a versatile player in his own right. Kyle Shanahan’s offense is designed to get playmakers the ball in a hurry, and McCaffrey has proven to be an amazing fit since being traded to San Francisco last season.

McCaffrey’s TD pass with the Niners last season was no flick from five yards out. In a mid-season game against the Rams last year, McCaffrey received a backward pass from Jimmy Garoppolo, then looked downfield and found a wide-open Brandon Ayiuk for a 34-yard score. However, that wasn’t McCaffrey’s first TD pass.

Back with the Carolina Panthers in the 2018 season, McCaffrey received a handoff on 4th and 2, only to set his feet and launch a pass to a wide-open Chris Manhertz, who scampered in for a 50-yard score.

While the Bengals have lots of offensive weapons, one guy that gets overlooked quite a bit is Joe Mixon. The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t complete their Cinderella run with a Super Bowl championship a couple of seasons ago, but they came very close. Now, they seem poised to remain perennial contenders as long as Joe Burrow stays healthy.

Much of the Bengals’ recent success is owed to Joe Mixon. However, while he’s normally the runner, he became the passer in the Super Bowl against the Los Angeles Rams. In the second quarter, Mixon threw a touchdown pass to Tee Higgins.

Marqise Lee may have not lived up to the hype that he had when he came out of USC as a fantastic wide receiver, but he still had his moments. One of those moments came in 2016 as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In a Christmas Eve game against the Tennessee Titans, the Jags got tricky. After a couple of laterals, Lee threw a pass to a wide-open Blake Bortles who strolled into the endzone for a touchdown. During a rough time for the Jaguars, this was a bright moment.

Johnny Hekker is a fantastic Pro Bowl punter. However, he’s gotten a lot of fanfare not due to his amazing ability to punt, but to pass. (It’s telling that you can actually compile a stat sheet on his passing numbers). Over the years, the special team player has completed many, many passes as a member of the Los Angeles Rams and now of the Carolina Panthers.

However, he’s only thrown one touchdown despite his many passes. In his rookie year in 2012 in a game against the Seattle Seahawks, Hekker threw a pass to a wide-open Danny Amendola on a fake field goal for the score.

Speaking of Danny Amendola, he’s had a couple of passes in his career as well. While he’s mostly remembered for his time as a member of the New England Patriots, his touchdown pass came as a member of the Detroit Lions.

The Lions had some pretty lean years in the late 2010s. However, one moment came in 2019, when Amendola got the ball on a pitch and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to David Blough. Since his time in Detroit, Amendola has also had stints with the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans.

Mohamed Sanu had a great career as a wide receiver in the NFL. Having had successful stints with the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, his sole touchdown pass actually came in his rookie season with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Incredibly, his first touchdown came before his first reception. In week 3 against Washington back in 2012, Sanu came out in the wildcat formation and threw a touchdown to A.J. Green for a 73-yard touchdown.

Doug Baldwin had a phenomenal career as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. He helped lead the squad to the Super Bowl in 2013, and nearly win another in 2014. However, few individual moments were better than his touchdown pass in 2016.

Against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Seahawks decided to run a trick play. After a reversal across the field, Baldwin threw a touchdown pass to quarterback Russell Wilson. The touchdown pass was the highlight of a 100-yard day for the receiver.

4 Trey Burton Threw The Pass On The Philly Special

There are few touchdown passes more iconic than Trey Burton’s. Despite not being a quarterback, he was on the throwing end of one of the most amazing plays in recent memory, and it happened on the biggest stage.

In Super Bowl 52 prior to halftime, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to run the “Philly Special”. After a couple of laterals, Burton threw a pass to a wide-open Nick Foles for a touchdown. The score was important, as it helped lift the team to a big upset win over the New England Patriots.

Odell Beckham Jr. has had a bit of an up and down career in the NFL to this point. However, he’s had no shortage of incredible moments on the field, with most of them coming as a member of the New York Giants.

One of his last true highlights was in 2018 against the Carolina Panthers. There, Beckham Jr. threw a strike to then-rookie Saquan Barkley for a big 57-yard touchdown.

Julian Edelman was a former college quarterback. While he was no Heisman trophy winner or anything too special, the New England Patriots decided to make the most of his passing ability on many occasions. Over the years, he threw eight passes in his career through the regular and postseason.

Two of those passes were touchdowns. The first came in the 2014 playoffs, as he threw a score to Danny Amendola against the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round. The second came in 2019 against the Philadelphia Eagles, as he threw a 15-yard strike to Philip Dorsett. Edelman threw six regular season passes in his career and completed all of them, proving he was a true ace in the hole for the Patriots.

LaDainian Tomlinson is one of the greatest running backs to ever hit the field, as he won the MVP and made it look easy against defenses in his prime. However, he’s also (statistically) one of the greatest players to ever throw the ball as well. Throughout his career, the former MVP threw 12 passes.

Of those 12 passes, eight of them were completed. Even more impressive is that all but one of those completed passes went for touchdowns. That’s a mind-boggling stat and makes Tomlinson only behind Walter Payton for the most touchdowns thrown by a non-quarterback.
