After a year and a half layoff, Ortega returned and got revenge in the rematch against Yair Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 237. Ortega faced Yair Rodríguez in July 2022 and lost the fight by TKO due to suffering a dislocated shoulder. ‘T-City’ went through some adversity in the first round and appeared badly hurt by Rodriguez clinical striking. Ortega previously fought for the UFC feather weight title against Alexander Volkanovski and lost a tough five-round war, picking up a Fight of the Night bonus.

Rodriguez is coming off a loss to Volkanovski in July last year after a win over Josh Emmet. Ortega vs. Rodriguez is a potential title eliminator against the new champion Ilia Topuria.

Ortega Showed His Durability

In round 1, Yair Rodriguez rocked Brian Ortega early in the first round with a straight to the temple and dropped him after a barrage of punishing shots. Ortega showed his heart as he continued to fight and look for opportunities to grapple and control Rodriguez. 10-9 Rodriguez.

In round 2, Ortega presses forward and applies pressure on Rodriguez by striking and clinching. After some attempts, Ortega secured a takedown and did damage with ground and pound from the top position with elbows. 10-9 Ortega.

In round 3, Ortega quickly gets a body lock which leads to a takedown of his opponent. Brian Ortega secures a choke and wins by submission.

Ortega Made His Feelings Towards Topuria Known Before The Fight

Prior to his knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski, Topuria vowed not to fight Brian Ortega. ‘T-City’ said at the time that he planned to eliminate anyone that Topuria could face, such as Max Holloway and other contenders, leaving the Spaniard no choice but to fight him.

“Let’s say you do win and you’re not going to give us a shot, then I’m going to make sure to ruin every contender. Simple as that. One, you have to win it. Two, I’m going to take all the contenders away from you… If you don’t want to fight us then I’m going to take all your people.”

In his post-fight interview, Ortega refused to callout Topuria and instead pointed to Dana White and other UFC executives to decide what is next for him after the huge victory.
