The Hollywood actors’ union has called off planned pickets in New York and Los Angeles for Friday (13.10.23) due to “potential safety concerns.”
Members of the SAG-AFTRA union initiated a strike in July to address various issues, such as concerns about residuals from streaming services and the use of artificial intelligence. Picketing was scheduled to continue this week in two of the entertainment industry’s major hub cities after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) broke down.
However, the union canceled the planned pickets for Friday. An Instagram statement explained, “In light of potential safety concerns unrelated to our ongoing strike, there will be no SAG-AFTRA pickets in New York City or Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 13. Stay safe and see you on the picket lines next week. #SagAftraStrong #SagAftraStrike.”
No further details were provided, but the cancellation is believed to be related to a call from the Islamist group Hamas for worldwide pro-Palestine demonstrations on Friday (13.10.23) amid the ongoing conflict with Israel.
Nonetheless, a statement from the New York Police Department emphasized, “There are no credible, specific threats to New York City… We are aware of the concern that postings circulating online have caused, and we have increased our uniform deployments at large gatherings and cultural gatherings to ensure public safety out of an abundance of caution.”
A message from the Los Angeles Police Department added, “[We are] aware of recent statements calling for action related to the conflict in the Middle East. We have no information about any specific or credible threats to the City of Los Angeles, but we are continuing to assess the situation for any potential impact on our communities. We will be reaching out to our local Jewish and Muslim communities and will be providing extra patrols during this difficult time.”
