Following his win, Nurmagomedov received a congratulatory call from Vladimir Putin, acknowledging the Dagestani champion’s sensational victory over MMA’s biggest star. However, the post-fight celebrations took a chaotic turn when Nurmagomedov leaped into the crowd in a burst of anger, targeting McGregor’s teammate, Dillon Danis, for a confrontation.

Putin’s gesture to Nurmagomedov was far beyond a mere congratulatory call; it came along with lavish gifts. According to the UFC CEO, Dana White, Putin’s phone call was just the beginning of a lavish display of generosity towards the then-UFC lightweight champion and his late father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

“He didn’t even make it back to his dressing room after the fight, and Putin was on the phone,” White recounted of the UFC 229 saga on the Games with Names podcast. “Putin gave him and his father, like, $20 million worth of property in Russia. Then he went into the Muslim territories where these guys are like, cars, money, gyms, whatever he wanted.”

The UFC CEO also revealed Nurmagomedov went on a tour of Muslim countries to celebrate the win.

Ziyavudin Magomedov, who was subsequently arrested on charges of purportedly embezzling state funds, provided the bulk of financial support for Khabib’s training camps. Additionally, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov bestowed upon Khabib extravagant gifts, including opulent cars.

The unsealed full UFC contract of Khabib Nurmagomedov revealed a page bearing the lightweight star’s signature, dated December 13, 2013, years prior to his championship victory. At that time, Khabib boasted an impressive record of 21-0, with a 5-0 streak in the UFC.

Under the terms of the contract, Khabib initially earned $21,000, coupled with a $21,000 win bonus. For each subsequent victory, his pay incrementally increased by $3,000, reaching $24,000/$24,000, $27,000/$27,000, and eventually maxing out at $30,000/$30,000. However, for his highly anticipated fight against McGregor, Khabib earned a disclosed pay of $2 million, which, when combined with PPV earnings, reportedly soared to approximately $20 million.


Following his retirement, despite receiving offers from the UFC exceeding $20 million, Khabib remained steadfast in his decision. In an interview with his friend Daniel Cormier, he expressed no regrets about retiring despite the lucrative proposals. Notable victories in his career include triumphs over Rafael dos Anjos, Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Edson Barboza, and Al Iaquinta.
