Highlights

  • Gunther vs. Lesnar would have been epic, but WWE has distanced itself from Lesnar due to legal issues.
  • Gunther is now in a position of power, with challengers needing to step up to face him at WrestleMania 40.
  • WrestleMania 40 has undergone changes, but the anticipation for Gunther’s match remains high despite Lesnar’s absence.

It’s not a big secret that one of the most anticipated matches WWE could have produced this year would have been Gunther versus Brock Lesnar. But, because of Lesnar’s association to the Vince McMahon sexual allegations scandal, the company has distanced itself from The Beast Incarnate, and, barring some sort of incredible change in the real-life legal narrative, Lesnar won’t be at WrestleMania 40.

Gunther seemed to confirm as much during a recent interview where he was asked what his dream match would be. Admitting that he wanted to face Lesnar, he noted that’s likely not going to happen now. He’s not sure it ever will. While speaking with GVWire:

“I always was vocal about my dream match in the past, but that fell through now. I don’t know if we’ll see Brock again if that’s ever going to happen. But I’m wide open when it comes to that, as of now.”

Gunther then shifted gears and said he’s in a position now where he is no longer the WWE Superstar chasing a dream match. Instead, challengers should be chasing him. Having proven himself to be arguably the best Intercontinental Champion in WWE history, Gunther doesn’t have an opponent for WrestleMania 40. It will be intriguing to see if someone steps up over the next few weeks. And, it will be fascinating to see if anyone can come close to creating the same kind of buzz Lesnar vs. Gunther would have.

Gunther vs. Lesnar Would Have Been a Dream Match

The anticipation for that eventual showdown was off the charts. The two teased locking horns in last year’s Royal Rumble and they’ve been kept apart since. The rumors were that Lesnar was set to be part of this year’s Royal Rumble, but when news broke that he was linked to photos being sent of the alleged victim in the Vince McMahon case, WWE pulled Lesnar. He’s since been removed from most advertising and products, yanked from the posters and game covers and there’s no sign of an imminent return.

WrestleMania 40 has seen some serious pivots over the past few weeks. Still expected to be a great show, the company is trying to piece together the best possible matches they can.
