Highlights

  • MJF made a positive impression on John Cena during their meeting at The Iron Claw premiere.
  • Cena praised MJF’s professionalism and expressed interest in potentially recruiting him for WWE.
  • Speculation continues on whether MJF will stay with AEW or eventually join WWE in the future.

Last November, at the premiere of A24’s The Iron Claw, the biopic about the famed and tragic Von Erich wrestling family, WWE’s John Cena got to meet then AEW World Champion MJF for the first time. MJF has a blink and you’ll miss it role as Lance Von Erich in the film, and while he revealed a little about what he and the leader of the Cenation talked about, Cena himself has now detailed what he said to the young star.

In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, John Cena spoke about his impressions of MJF and if he tried to recruit him to WWE. Cena said:

“Sports entertainment is a finicky business, and again, there’s a lot of chances to make moments. This is one of their top performers for AEW and I don’t know if I’m going to be the target of a moment. I’m just going to support my friend in a movie. He couldn’t have been nicer. He couldn’t have been more cordial. We met each other and I got pulled away to take some pictures and then we were about to go do everything else before I even got to you, and I was like, ‘Hold on. Give me two minutes.’ I shook his hand. I said, ‘Man, I’m so sorry. Excuse my ignorance, I didn’t know what to expect from you today. You are a class act. I can’t believe you’re as professional as you are. That’s just my ignorance. I’m sorry I had that judgment. I want to thank you for being so special. Thanks for making my night.’

“Then we got back and I was able to talk to him more and I kind of was like, ‘Maybe we can get you to play for the right team one day’, and all that. There’s no denying the fact that he’s doing good work and I don’t think that I should ignore that. Honestly, I was floored by his professionalism.” (h/t

Every MJF AEW PPV Match Of 2023, Ranked

MJF has been missing from AEW since losing his AEW World Championship to Samoa Joe at Worlds End at the end of December. 2023 was one of MJF’s best years thanks to a successful babyface run alongside Adam Cole. Their storyline ended with a dud when injuries to both Cole and MJF brought no conclusion to Cole’s heel turn reveal as the Devil. January 2024 was meant to be a bidding war between AEW and WWE for MJF’s services. Right now, no one knows what decision MJF will make, as recovering from his serious shoulder injury is his main concern at the moment.

There had been a report last year that WWE thought MJF had already secretly signed a new deal with AEW, but that hasn’t been confirmed. Even if he does stay with Tony Khan’s promotion, with MJF only being 27, you have to believe that he’ll still end up in WWE one day.
