Retirement has never really been a word that has carried all that much meaning in wrestling. From Terry Funk having a retirement match every other month to doctors clearing stars who were previously told they’d never wrestle again. Unless a wrestler is no longer with us, there’s almost always a chance they might wrestle again, no matter how small that chance might be. That’ll be why Kevin Owens still hasn’t given up on getting Shawn Michaels back in the ring one more time.

Bothering Shawn Michaels

The Prizefighter appeared on Fanatics Live this week, revealing to fans that he continues to ask HBK for a match every single year. (H/T to Fightful for the transcription).

I keep bothering Shawn Michaels every year to come back. He just won’t. He’s so nice about it every year. This year, I texted him, he didn’t answer me for two months and then when he answered me it was to say, ‘Well, I know I’m a little late, but I just had shoulder surgery, so I don’t think it’s happening.’ You could’ve said no two months ago. You didn’t have to get cut for it.

Owens presumably reaches out to Michaels in the run-up to WrestleMania each year, or a few months before WWE’s biggest show of the year so if HBK does change his mind, there will be time to build to the match. KO is probably the wrestler who has the best chance of tempting Michaels into one more match too after how well his WrestleMania showdown with Stone Cold went two years ago, Austin’s first match for almost two decades.

HBK’s Last Retirement Match

Michaels has already come out of retirement once, and it’s that match which is probably preventing him from doing it again. HBK reunited DX for a match against the Brothers of Destruction in 2018, but it did not go well. The very dim silver lining was that Michaels was the best of the four involved in the match, but that wasn’t enough to prove to the Hall of Famer that he’s still got it.

HBK is clearly still in shape, and as always when this subject comes up, I’m torn. On the one hand, I understand why he doesn’t want to wrestle again. There’s every chance he has another bad match and it compounds his belief that he should have stayed retired in 2010. However, the odds of him having a better match with someone like KO or AJ Styles are high, and doing so would make fans forget about that terrible tag match.
