Mustafa Ali returns to WWE NXT

WWE Superstar Mustafa Ali is on the hunt for gold and he’s determined to find it in NXT.

Mustafa Ali is one of the most underutilized stars in WWE today. He signed with the company in 2016 after competing in the Cruiserweight Classic. After the tournament, he became part of the 205 Live roster. Fans came to love Mustafa Ali for his high-flying style and infectious sense of optimism. His run on the main roster has been an unfortunate series of missed opportunities. The biggest boost Mustafa has received thus far came when he was attached to the Retribution faction, a WWE caricature of Antifa.

This gives him the freedom to appear on any brand he pleases, be it Raw, Smackdown or NXT. As fans learned tonight, Mustafa has decided to try his luck with the third brand.

One of the matches featured on tonight’s episode of NXT was a tag team match between Schism (Jagger Reid and Rip Fowler) and North American Champion Wes Lee and his friend Tyler Bate. About halfway through the fight, Mustafa Ali appeared in the crowd and walked to the ring. He joined the commentary team and explained that since he is a free agent, he can appear on any brand he wants.

Wes Lee and Tyler Bate won their match but were immediately attacked by their opponents and Joe Gacy. Mustafa Ali jumped into the ring to even the odds and helped drive off the Schism. He then held Bate and Lee’s hands up, showing his support for the babyface team.

Mustafa Ali does not yet have a title in WWE. Hopefully this run on NXT changes that. If tonight provides any clues, it’s likely we’ll see Ali take on Wes Lee for the NXT North American Championship in the near future.
