CM Punk and Colt Cabana had been friends for years before their big falling out, ever since they were just rookies in the wrestling industry, working their way up to superstardom. Ever since, there has never been any reconciliation between the two. CM Punk is now back in WWE, Colt Cabana is in AEW. And based on reports of what happened there, tensions between the two of them only continued. The consequences of which ended up having a major impact on AEW.

The end of the friendship between CM Punk and Colt Cabana ended up having numerous consequences that could not have been foreseen. When they were at the same company, AEW, it ended up having a role in changing the course of AEW history. If they had remained friends, would “Brawl Out” never have happened? Would CM Punk still be on AEW television? Would he ever even have considered returning to WWE? All of these questions, and many more what ifs, will never be answered. All that we can look at is what took place and what happened. Ultimately, it is safe to assume that CM Punk and Colt Cabana will probably never be friends again.


CM Punk and Colt Cabana’s Start In The Business

They Both Trained At Steel Domain

CM Punk and Colt Cabana started in the business together, both going to wrestling training at Steel Domain Wrestling in St Paul, Minnesota. They worked together and feuded together on the independent scene for years before they both signed with Ring Of Honor, where they both had success. Colt Cabana would say in an interview with Wrestlinginc.com in 2007:


Punk and I have been a team since basically the first month I was training. We traveled the roads together a very long time. He’s my brother in wrestling and life. I talk to him everyday.”


Eventually, both men also signed with WWE but had incredibly different levels of success. CM Punk was able to reach the highest of highs in WWE while Colt Cabana was rechristened as Scotty Goldman, but was unfortunately released not long after debuting on the main roster. However this didn’t dampen their friendship, as during the pinnacle of CM Punk’s run in WWE, Punk made constant references to his friendship with Colt Cabana, none more infamously than when he called out Cabana during CM Punk’s notorious “Pipebomb” promo. The two kept in touch throughout all of CM Punk’s career in WWE and beyond. Though problems started to emerge when CM Punk made a scandalous appearance on Colt Cabana’s Art of Wrestling podcast.

CM Punk had left WWE in mysterious circumstances, getting eliminated from the 2014 Royal Rumble by Kane, and Punk had remained silent for a time after his release. CM Punk’s appearance on the Art Of Wrestling podcast was his tell-all interview and has gone on to become one of the most famous shoot interviews of all time. Punk discussed his misery in the last few years of his WWE run, his frustration at the company and Vince McMahon and made allegations against WWE’s doctor at the time, Dr. Chris Amann. He also aired grievances about his booking, including being shunned from top spots and Wrestlemania main events.

CM Punk has had many friendships throughout his wrestling career, but some relationships took a hit.

This interview resulted in WWE suing CM Punk and Colt Cabana after CM Punk alleged that Amann was responsible for Punk contracting a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) staph infection. Punk also blamed Amann for providing medical treatment which caused a lump on Punk’s back to get worse. WWE and Dr. Chris Amann sued CM Punk and Colt Cabana for this – a lawsuit CM Punk won, but at a cost.

After the trial, it was revealed both men had filed lawsuits against each other for the way it was handled. Cabana claims that CM Punk offered to pay Cabana’s legal fees during the Amann lawsuit and that he and Punk had a verbal contract. Cabana argued that CM Punk should reimburse him for the legal fees he incurred after Punk’s legal team were no longer handling Cabana’s side of the lawsuit. The lawsuit appeared to have ripped apart the friendship between CM Punk and Colt Cabana.

Many fans took Colt Cabana’s side in this. However, in 2019, CM Punk took to X to comment on the lawsuit between the men. Punk called Cabana greedy and alleges that Cabana tried to extort him. He tweeted:

One of the most infamous nights in AEW history occurred at All Out 2022. At the post-media event, Punk addressed a number of issues he had with AEW, including his personal issues with The Elite and Colt Cabana. Rumors were floating around that CM Punk had tried to get Cabana fired from AEW. Tony Khan had initially not resigned Cabana, something which people thought was Punk being in the ear of Khan. However, Cabana ended up eventually being resigned to the company. After the media talk, Punk and The Elite had a physical altercation backstage, resulting in the suspension of all four wrestlers.
