Update On a Potential Match Between Steve Austin And CM Punk

  • Rumors of a dream match between CM Punk and Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 40 are just speculation at this point.
  • Stone Cold Steve Austin has been reluctant to return to in-ring competition and has reportedly turned down previous opportunities.
  • While fans are eager for a match between Punk and Austin, it’s unclear if Austin has any interest in returning to the ring.

With all the hype surrounding CM Punk’s return to WWE, dream match scenarios were immediately pitched by all corners of the wrestling fan base. Whispers of a dream match between CM Punk and Stone Cold Steve Austin bubbled back up to the surface, with Fightful reporting that it wasn’t completely out of the question. But, another report on Tuesday suggests that Punk vs. Austin is nothing more than speculation. At this point, there have been no talks and no pitches to either man to have that match.

Austin, a wrestling icon, has been a sporadic presence in the ring since his last match with Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38. Working without being 100% physically, Austin has said the situation and the story has to be exactly right for him to come back and wrestle. It’s not clear how he would view a WrestleMania 40 match with Punk, but it doesn’t appear anyone has asked yet. Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer recently poured cold water on the speculation, stating discussions are “premature.” He emphasized that the potential bout has not been a topic of significant conversation within WWE.

Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Additionally, there is no indication that WWE has approached Stone Cold Steve Austin about the matchup.

Despite occasional pushes from within WWE for his return, Austin has reportedly turned down the opportunity several times. It appears the Texas Rattlesnake was content to conclude his in-ring career on his own terms with a significant match, signaling his retirement from active competition. Whether that changes is far from being determined. WWE has other things to do with Punk before that’s ever really a concern. For Austin, the only thing he’d need to do is make sure he’s got enough time to get in perfomance shape.

There Is An Audience For Punk vs. Austin

Previous teases between the two, notably during the WWE ’13 video game promotion in 2012, were rooted in creating hype rather than concrete plans. Austin, who was retired and not medically cleared at the time, engaged in promotional tension with Punk. But, fans have reposted that video over the past few days, referencing it as though there’s a storyline WWE can work off of. It’s clear much of the WWE Universe wants it. That said, it remains unclear if the Hall of Famer has any interest in a return to regular in-ring competition.
