Why Roman Reigns & The Rock Should Beat Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins At WrestleMania 40

Highlights

  • The Rock inserting himself into WrestleMania 40 shakes up established plans for Cody Rhodes’ big moment.
  • Cody must lose Saturday’s match and endure interference from The Bloodline to achieve true heroics.
  • Roman Reigns and The Rock must win their tag team match to set up the final showdown for Cody Rhodes’ journey.

The main event of WrestleMania 40 is set with two-time Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes challenging Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at the end of night two. It was a chaotic mess to get there, but now that it’s official, Rhodes should finally finish his story and be the one who takes down the Tribal Chief. Before we get to that, however, WrestleMania 40 has a main event for Saturday night as well, with Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins going up against Reigns and his cousin, The Rock. There are big stakes involved, and because of that, Rhodes and Rollins have to lose.

The Rock Has Inserted Himself Into The WrestleMania 40 Picture

Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania Moment Was Almost Taken From Him

  • Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39
  • Cody Rhodes won the 2023 and 2024 Royal Rumble
  • The Rock has returned to WWE

After Cody Rhodes lost to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, WWE spent the next year repeatedly focusing on Cody’s quest to finish his story and become a WWE Champion, winning a title that his father, Dusty Rhodes, never did. There was little suspense that WWE was preparing for a WrestleMania rematch, and fans were all for it. The future became clear when Cody won the 2024 Royal Rumble, but then, as we know, everything went sideways.

Suddenly, The Rock, who had just become a TKO board member, stepped up to challenge Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40, while Rhodes strangely stepped aside. After immense fan outrage, WWE has wisely changed course. It looks like The Rock vs Roman Reigns will be delayed until next year, but that doesn’t mean Dwayne Johnson is staying home this year. Instead, he went full heel, leaning into his Hollywood Rock persona and aligning himself with Reigns. But where could that lead?

Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins Vs Roman Reigns & The Rock Will Main Event WrestleMania

The Rock Laid Down The Tag Team Challenge On A Recent SmackDown

Over the last few weeks we’ve found out. On the March 1 SmackDown, the Great One laid down the challenge of him and Reigns vs Rhodes and Rollins at night one of WrestleMania 40. If Cody and Seth could win, they had The Rock’s word that The Bloodline would stay out of Reigns vs Rhodes the next night. If The Rock and Roman won, however, then that meant night two’s main event was Bloodline rules, where anything goes.

That’s how it always goes anyway (name the last time Roman beat someone clean without an Uso or Solo Sikoa getting involved), but still, the stakes were intriguing, and on the March 8 SmackDown, Rollins and Rhodes accepted. Now everyone can be happy, as we get not one but two mega WrestleMania main events.

Roman Reigns & The Rock Have To Win Their WrestleMania Tag Team Match

A Loss Opens Up More Possibilities For Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins

  • The Rock will eventually turn on Roman Reigns
  • Drew McIntyre is likely to beat Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship
  • Cody Rhodes must overcome The Bloodline to finish his story

You can see what’s going to happen at WrestleMania 40 from a mile away. The Rock has been in cahoots with Cody Rhodes the whole time to take down Roman Reigns and The Bloodline from within. At the Grandest Stage of Them All, the Brahma Bull is turning on his cousin, setting up their match for WrestleMania. The only question is when that turn happens. Does he turn on Roman Reigns on Saturday or Sunday?

The answer is that it needs to happen on Sunday. The Rock and Roman Reigns must win over Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins for a variety of reasons. For one, if The Rock turns on Roman on WrestleMania Saturday, then it sets up an excuse if Rhodes beats Reigns on Sunday. The bigger stakes and most interesting storylines, though, are what a Saturday loss does for the challengers from Monday Night Raw. If Rollins loses on Saturday, he goes into Sunday a beaten man. He’s heavily favored to lose his World Heavyweight Championship to the deserving Drew McIntyre, and now, with two losses in two nights, will a frustrated Rollins turn on his former enemy, Cody Rhodes, in the main event?

Bigger yet is what it does for Cody Rhodes. If Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins win their main event tag team match on WrestleMania Saturday, then it lowers the drama for Sunday. A hero is always at his best when he overcomes everything against all odds. Rhodes has to lose, so that the hero fights the final boss while at his weakest. He then needs to withstand the punishment of The Bloodline throwing everything at him, refusing to stay down, until The Rock puts a stop to the intereference and clears the way for Roman and Reigns to end their dispute all alone. That is how you finish a story.
