Will Smith Reveals He Was Terrified On His First Date: ‘My Concern Was That I Was Going To Get Killed’

In a recent episode of his “Class of ’88” podcast, Will Smith opened up about a particularly nerve-wracking experience – his one and only date with Sandra “Pepa” Denton from Salt-N-Pepa, revealing the underlying apprehension he felt during their late ’80s outing.

During their appearance on the show, Smith disclosed his long-standing admiration for Denton, admitting that she had always been involved with someone else, until she was suddenly single. “I saw an opportunity,” he recounted. “We were both going to be in LA at the same time, so I decided to shoot my shot.”

In a bid to impress her, Smith rented a white Mercedes convertible, intending to take her on a scenic tour of the Hollywood Hills and Mulholland Drive to watch the sunset. However, behind his confident facade, Smith confessed, “I always faked like I had game. I didn’t really have game.”

Denton, on the other hand, remembered the night differently, recalling Smith’s gesture of kindness towards a homeless person they encountered and their subsequent visit to the Hollywood sign. However, Smith admitted that, in reality, he was anxious, fearing for his safety.

“My concern was that I was going to get killed,” he said. “That was my concern when I was trying to spit my game, but I ain’t really have nothing.”

Their romantic encounter didn’t lead to much beyond that evening, and their relationship fizzled out, although they remained on good terms. Smith later tied the knot with Jada Pinkett Smith in 1997, while Denton briefly married rapper Treach from 1999 to 2001.
