WWE SummerSlam 2023 Event Information

Since 1988, WWE has put on the most universally hyped and acclaimed wrestling show of the summer year after year: SummerSlam. Last year’s event was hosted in Nashville, Tennesse and was headlined by the final encounter between career rivals Roman Reigns & Brock Lesnar in a match that saw the Beast Incarnate hit the ring with of all things, a tractor. Other highlights included a banger of an opener pitting Bianca Belair & Becky Lynch against each other and the return of Bayley to the company after being injured for a long time.

With the hype for the event heating up, this guide should serve as the perfect resource for everything you need to know about the Premium Live Event and SummerSlam’s history.

WWE SummerSlam 2023 Main Event Announced

After the July 21st episode of Smackdown, SummerSlam 2023 finally had its rumored main event officially announced. Roman Reigns will face off against his cousin Jey Uso one more for time for the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship. But this time, it will also be a “Tribal Combat” match with Reigns’ status as Tribal Chief on the line as well. Asuka will also put her WWE Women’s Championship on the line against former champions Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair.

Two More Matches Announced For WWE SummerSlam 2023

With SummerSlam being one of WWE’s biggest shows of the year, more matches were needed to flesh out the card and on this past week’s episode of Raw, two more were announced. One is the highly anticipated one on one encounter for the Intercontinental Championship between the challenger Drew McIntyre and the champion Gunther. The other is a match that will surely get the online wrestling community talking as Logan Paul takes on Ricochet.

After almost three years since their last one on one encounter at Hell In A Cell 2020, fans will finally have their long-awaited rematch between Jey Uso and the WWE Undisputed Universal Champion, Roman Reigns.

Jey Uso was actually the first challenger to step up to Reigns back in the fall of 2020 when he challenged Reigns in back-to-back matches where he got absolutely obliterated. These matches were perfect to solidify Reigns as the top heel threat in WWE but a lot has changed since 2020. Jey Uso was the first man to pin Roman Reigns in almost 4 years as he beat The Tribal Chief with a top rope splash at Money In The Bank 2023.

On an episode of Smackdown, the two agreed to a “Tribal Combat” match. Presumably, this will be a no-rules, anything-goes kind of match with an added stipulation. Roman Reigns must not only put his championship belts on the line but his title of “Tribal Chief” as well. To these proud Samoans there is no bigger match than this and is already one of the most anticipated main events in SummerSlam history.

  • What Matches Have Been Announced For WWE SummerSlam 2023?

    • Cody Rhodes Vs Brock Lesnar

For starters, Brock Lesnar & Cody Rhodes are set to clash in what will be their third match of the year. This feud is seemingly designed to keep Cody Rhodes in a high-profile spotlight before his rumored rematch with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 and it certainly has kept Rhodes visible in the widest possible audience. Rumors were floating around in June that the two would face each other in a Dog Collar match, but that idea was reportedly shot down by WWE. As of right now, the match will seemingly be a standard singles match.

    • Ronda Rousey Vs. Shayna Baszler

In one of the most shocking betrayals in WWE history, Shayna Baszler attacked Ronda Rousey at Money In The Bank 2023 and cost her team the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. Baszler made the reasons for her actions known on RAW, saying that she felt Rousey abandoned her at key points of her life and that she ruined her love for wrestling. Rousey is rumored to be taking time from WWE after SummerSlam so this bout will surely be an intense one.

    • WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins (c) Vs. Finn Balor

In a rivalry that began all the way back at SummerSlam 2016, Seth Rollins will defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor. In their original encounter, Balor beat Rollins to win the Universal Championship, becoming the first holder of the belt which is known held by Roman Reigns. However, an injury forced Balor to vacate the title one day after winning it. Fueled by his bitterness, Balor challenged Rollins at WWE Money In The Bank but lost partially due to Balor being distracted by his partner in Judgment Day, Damian Priest. The fact that Priest also holds the Money In The Bank Briefcase makes this match extremely intriguing for WWE fans.

    • WWE Women’s Championship: Asuka (C) Vs. Charlotte Flair Vs. Bianca Belair

When talking about championship-level dominance in WWE’s Women’s Division, it doesn’t get much better than Asuka, Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair. Flair of course has the most women’s title reigns of any performer in WWE history, while Belair and Asuka both have had fewer but much more lengthy reigns with various titles.

After both Belair and Flair had their singles championship matches end in chaos on Smackdown, a triple threat match seems to be the only way to decide who walks out of Detroit as the WWE Women’s Champion. But with Money In The Bank winner Iyo Sky waiting in the wings, a triple threat may not be enough to stop the match from becoming pure mayhem.

    • Logan Paul Vs Ricochet

      via WWE

In a match that has been building ever since the Royal Rumble, social media sensation Logan Paul will be taking on Ricochet in a match that is definitely going to produce some memorable highlights.

Paul first clashed with Ricochet back in January at the Royal Rumble where the two collided in mid-air in a spot that will be replayed for years to come.

Over the past few weeks, Paul has called out Ricochet’s lack of popularity with fans and generally trash-talked him while the high-flyer has responded back with physical attacks more than anything else. This will definitely be the highest-profile match of Ricochet’s career, but whether or not he lives up to the challenge is the real question.

    • WWE Intercontinental Championship: Gunther (C) vs. Drew McIntyre

After Gunther disposed of Matt Riddle at WWE Money In The Bank, fans were wondering just who in the world was going to be the next challenger for his Intercontinental Championship. Turns out, they didn’t have to wait long as Drew McIntyre made his long-awaited return to WWE and knocked Gunther down with a Claymore Kick.

On the July 24th episode of Raw, a title match was made official between these two European brawlers. Although McIntyre got his hands on Gunther at WrestleMania this year in a triple-threat match alongside Sheamus, the Scottish superstar will finally have his chance to go one on one with the IC Champion.

  • Where Is WWE SummerSlam 2023 Taking Place?

30 years ago, SummerSlam 1993 took place in Detroit, Michigan. While that night ended with one of the most disappointing matches in WWE history, this year’s SummerSlam hopes to redeem that night as it takes place in Detroit as well at the massive Ford Field stadium.

While the city itself played host to a SummerSlam in 1993, the last major WWE PLE to take was actually the legendary WrestleMania 23. That night saw classic matches such as The Undertaker vs. Batista, John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels and the Battle Of Billionaires between Vince McMahon’s champion Umaga vs Donald Trump’s champion Bobby Lashley.
