Originally slated for a streaming release via Paramount+, the studio opted to release the film theatrically after strong positive test screenings. Smile had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30, 2022 by Paramount Pictures.

Smile earned positive reviews from critics, who praised the visuals, sound design, musical score, themes, direction, and Bacon’s performance, and has grossed $210 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million. . In Finn’s debut, Smile (out September 30), a malevolent supernatural entity takes over people and forces them to perform terrible acts while grinning from ear to ear.

As part of Paramount’s marketing campaign for the film, the performers were prominent at Friday baseball games, where they donned the biggest smile they could muster. “I have to say that Paramount’s marketing has been very clever with some of the tricks they had up their sleeves for this movie,” says Finn. “This is something that had been discussed a while ago and we were all kind of crossing our fingers that someone would notice it.”
